Schools World Cup Programme

On Monday 10th November over 300 children descended on the John Charles Centre for Sport, wearing face paints and sporting flags and banners, excited for what would be a memorable day!  Young people from 9 primary schools across South Leeds were all prepared to compete in the Hunslet Hawks World Cup Festival.

The Programme began in September with all the schools involved being allocated one of the Countries currently taking part in this years Rugby League World Cup in Australia.  Carrying out research projects, each of the year 6 classes created collages and displays within their school to represent their ‘adopted’ country.

10 children, mixed boys and girls, from each school were selected to take part in a coaching day at Beeston Broncos Rugby club, with 5 coaching stations led by coaches from Hunslet Parkside, Beeston Broncos, East Leeds and Oulton Raiders the players had the chance to learn new skills and meet new friends and coaches from their local amateur clubs, which they may go on to play for!

As buses full of children, teachers and parents arrived, a fantastic atmosphere was created within the stadium.  The day began with a parade round the track with each country displaying their banners and flags as they marched round the pitch singing and chanting! Before the games kicked off a brilliant rendition of the New Zealand Haka was performed in front of the crowd by Carlton Primary School.

The Games were played across 3 pitches, with all teams playing each other once in 7 minute matches under generic Tag Rugby rules.  After some great ball handling skills were shown by all the players over the preliminary rounds, the top four teams competed for a chance to play in the Hunslet Hawks World Cup Final! Progressing from the semi finals were Ireland (Morley Newlands) and Fiji (East Ardsley). After a competitive and exciting final, in front of the 300 strong crowd, Ireland emerged as the champions!

After the celebrations the presentations began, firstly with an award to England (Rothwell C of E) who were judged to be the most colourfully presented school, although all the schools looked magnificent! The games were played in good spirit by all, and Papua New Guinea (Gildersome Primary) were chosen for the fair play award.  Then it was the turn of the winners, Ireland to be presented with The Hunslet Hawks World Cup Trophy, much to the delight of their 60 travelling supporters!!

Councillor Ann Castle commented, “I thought it was a brilliant idea to tie it up to the World Cup and get the young people involved in learning more about the various countries involved in the matches.   From talking to some of the young people on Monday, I found that they have really enjoyed the project”

A wonderful time was had by all!!
